While most of the top tier NFL free agents have signed with teams at this juncture, there is still plenty of talent left on the market. One player still searching for a new NFL home is safety Tyrann Mathieu, who is visiting the New Orleans Saints this week while he’s in town seeing family and friends, per NFL Media. The three-time Pro Bowler is not only from New Orleans, but also went to school at LSU and was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. While the “Honey Badger” is set to turn 30 in May, he’s made two straight Pro Bowls and is a veteran who can serve as the leader for any defense. He is CBS Sports’ No. 2 available free agent behind cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The Saints have climbed out of a salary cap hole for the second straight year, and currently have $19.45 million in available money, per Over The Cap, which ranks fifth in the NFL. Mathieu just finished a three-year, $42 million contract he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the 2019 season. According to Spotrac’s market value calculations, Mathieu is projected to sign a three-year, $44.59 million deal which carries an average annual salary of $14.8 million. New Orleans lost free safety Marcus Williams to the Baltimore Ravens in free agency, but did replace him with Marcus Maye. The Saints are apparently interested in pairing Maye with another star at safety. In 2021, Mathieu recorded 76 combined tackles, one sack, three interceptions and six passes defensed. If it’s not the Saints, other potential landing spots for Mathieu include the Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys.
