Jalen Reagor is well aware of the leadership capabilities Jalen Hurts brings to the Philadelphia Eagles, as both of the team’s top two picks from the 2020 draft class have something to prove heading into their second NFL season.Hurts has experienced success in the league through his four starts, while Reagor is looking to prove he belongs. The chip on their shoulders is part of the reason the players believe in each other. Heading into the first of two joint practices with the New York Jets in Florham Park, New Jersey, all Hurts needed was one phrase to fire up Reagor and the other Eagles wide receivers — as he and the group had one of their best practices to date. “Just on the bus ride up here, he was like ‘I’m in that mode,'” Reagor said of Hurts after practice Tuesday. “That’s the captain. He leads us for sure.” So what did Hurts mean by that? “I was just excited for practice,” Hurts said. “Excited to be out here with my teammates. Excited to face the Jets. Call it what you want.” The Eagles offense outplayed the Jets defense in Tuesday’s practice, with Hurts connecting on some deep throws in the session. Hurts hit Dallas Goedert for a long touchdown and connected with Quez Watkins down the field — Watkins made an unbelievable catch — that highlighted a strong practice for the Eagles quarterback. The Eagles No. 1 quarterback also adjusted well to blitzes, adjusting the protection and completing passes up the middle of the field. Hurts held on to the ball longer than he has been in previous practices, but he was efficient on the big pass plays. The Eagles had to be pleased with what they saw. Reagor sure was. “I just believe (he’s going to have a big year),” Reagor said. “He’s very intentional. He has a big chip on his shoulder. He’s going to shock a lot of people.” Based on what Hurts demonstrated last season in limited action, the Eagles quarterback appears to be headed in that direction. “We’re only worried about taking that step every day,” Hurts said. “We got better today. We’re a better football team than we were yesterday. I’m happy we took that step today.” Get the latest Eagles news from insider Jeff Kerr by downloading the CBS Sports app. Will Nick Sirianni boom or bust as an NFL head coach?
